One theme keeps coming up: innovation isn’t lacking in UK Defence, it’s the application of that innovation that often falls short.
From innovation cells to hubs like JHub and NavyX, there’s no shortage of platforms designed to drive change. But while the tools exist, what’s missing is often the most human element: people.
Having spoken with several people working across the defence ecosystem, we’ve heard time and time again that innovation is being trialled in silos. Separate services are running parallel pilots, sometimes even with the same providers, but they’re not talking to one another. Lessons aren’t being shared. Opportunities for collaboration are missed. And ideas with real promise sometimes stall before they reach the end user.
What’s needed is an innovation network that prioritises people. A space that not only encourages the development of new ideas but actively connects those ideas with personnel across the services, whether that’s in the Army, RAF, or Royal Navy.
A more networked approach means something powerful: if someone in the Navy identifies a challenge and proposes a solution, that idea can be shared with the wider services, tested collectively, and, if it works, rolled out more effectively. By connecting the people closest to the problem, collaboration becomes more natural, and truly innovative solutions can emerge.
That’s why the idea of “Connect. Collaborate. Create.” resonates so strongly.
At iO Associates, we know that the right people make innovation happen. That’s why we’re heading to the Security Cleared EXPO in Bristol, to connect with individuals and organisations who are driving real change in Defence and Government.
Whether you’re looking to grow your team, expand your capabilities, or find a new opportunity in the sector, we’d love to talk. We’re specialists in recruiting for cleared roles across tech, engineering, cyber, and intelligence, and we’re proud to support some of the most exciting innovation projects happening across Defence.
Come and see us at the SC Expo, Bristol, on 24th April
Let’s talk about your talent strategy, share ideas, and explore how we can help you connect, collaborate, and create.
