SENIOR MARINE SYSTEMS ENGINEER
BRISTOL (3 DAYS ONSITE)
£65,000 – £80,000 DOE
A Senior Marine Systems Engineer is required to join a specialist engineering organisation delivering high-impact work across the maritime and defence sector. This role sits at the front end of engineering-focused on concept development, capability definition, and informing strategic decisions for next-generation naval platforms.
You will lead the development of platform concepts from initial capability requirements through to high-level designs, supporting trade space analysis and collaborative exercises. Working across surface and subsurface, crewed and uncrewed platforms, you’ll play a key role in shaping future maritime capability through systems-level thinking and technical leadership.
You’ll operate where decisions are made-translating stakeholder needs into viable platform concepts, analysing trade-offs, and coordinating multi-disciplinary inputs to support future programme direction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead platform concept development based on capability requirements
- Develop concepts across a range of maritime platforms (crewed/uncrewed, surface/subsurface)
- Conduct trade space analysis (e.g. survivability, speed, automation, crew size)
- Undertake high-level sizing, costing, and power/propulsion estimates
- Produce concept cards and support analytical/tabletop exercises
- Assess capability gaps and define system requirements
- Coordinate cross-functional teams (naval architecture, systems, autonomy, cost engineering)
- Support certification and regulatory analysis for maritime systems
- Provide technical oversight, reporting, and input into design reviews
Required Skills & Experience:
- Active SC Clearance (transferable)
- Engineering degree (Marine, Mechanical, Electrical or similar)
- Senior-level experience: 5+ years post-Chartership OR 9+ years relevant experience
- Strong background in warship or naval platform concept design
- Experience translating stakeholder requirements into system-level concepts
- Proven experience in early-stage ship design (concept/pre-concept)
- Knowledge of power, propulsion, and platform systems
- Experience in collaborative engineering and analytical exercises
Desirable Experience:
- Multi-disciplinary team leadership on complex maritime projects
- Knowledge of autonomy, AI, and uncrewed systems
- Familiarity with certification frameworks (e.g. Lloyd’s, DNV, IMO, MASS Code)
- Experience with electric propulsion or advanced naval systems
- Understanding of MoD systems engineering principles and maritime standards
If you’re looking to work at the cutting edge of maritime capability-where your work directly influences future platform decisions-this is a strong opportunity to step into a high-impact, concept-driven engineering role.
Please note: This role requires active SC Clearance. Applicants must meet UK national security clearance eligibility requirements.
