Network Engineer (Active SC Clearance)
Overview
Our Scientific Technology organisation is seeking a Network Engineer to join their team supporting secure, mission-critical infrastructure in the South of England. This role requires active UK Security Clearance (SC) and the ability to work on-site in the South of England 3-5 days per week (hybrid depending on project needs).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide BAU and project-based network engineering across secure environments.
- Configure, support and troubleshoot LAN/WAN/WLAN networks (L2/L3).
- Manage and maintain routing, switching, and firewall services; diagnose complex connectivity and performance issues.
- Support secure network changes end-to-end: planning, implementation, testing, and rollback.
- Contribute to network design/improvements (availability, resilience, segmentation, performance).
- Work with security and infrastructure teams to maintain compliance and improve security posture (e.g., hardening, access controls, logging).
- Produce and maintain technical documentation (as-built diagrams, HLD/LLD, change records, SOPs).
- Participate in out-of-hours / on-call support as required (if applicable).
Essential Skills & Experience
- Active SC Clearance (must be current/valid).
- Proven experience as a Network Engineer in enterprise environments (ideally secure/government-adjacent).
- Strong hands-on expertise in:
- Cisco switching/routing (or equivalent enterprise networking)
- TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, STP, NAT
- Routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP) and VPN concepts
- Firewall operations (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet, Check Point, Cisco ASA/Firepower)
- Strong troubleshooting capability (packet flow, latency, MTU, asymmetric routing, etc.).
- Experience working with ITIL-style change control and structured incident/problem management.
Desirable (Nice to Have)
- Experience in scientific, R&D, or high-performance/technical compute environments.
- Exposure to network segmentation / zero trust concepts in secure environments.
- Load balancing (e.g., F5) and/or proxy solutions.
- Network monitoring/tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, Splunk, SNMP/syslog).
- Automation/scripting (e.g., Ansible, Python, infrastructure-as-code exposure).
- Understanding of data centre networking and/or cloud connectivity (AWS/Azure networking).
Working Arrangement / Location
- Location: South of England
- On-site requirement: 3-5 days per week (candidate must be able to regularly attend site)
- Eligibility: Must hold active SC Clearance and be eligible to work in the UK
