Network Engineer (Active SC Clearance)

Overview

Our Scientific Technology organisation is seeking a Network Engineer to join their team supporting secure, mission-critical infrastructure in the South of England. This role requires active UK Security Clearance (SC) and the ability to work on-site in the South of England 3-5 days per week (hybrid depending on project needs).

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide BAU and project-based network engineering across secure environments.
  • Configure, support and troubleshoot LAN/WAN/WLAN networks (L2/L3).
  • Manage and maintain routing, switching, and firewall services; diagnose complex connectivity and performance issues.
  • Support secure network changes end-to-end: planning, implementation, testing, and rollback.
  • Contribute to network design/improvements (availability, resilience, segmentation, performance).
  • Work with security and infrastructure teams to maintain compliance and improve security posture (e.g., hardening, access controls, logging).
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation (as-built diagrams, HLD/LLD, change records, SOPs).
  • Participate in out-of-hours / on-call support as required (if applicable).

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Active SC Clearance (must be current/valid).
  • Proven experience as a Network Engineer in enterprise environments (ideally secure/government-adjacent).
  • Strong hands-on expertise in:
    • Cisco switching/routing (or equivalent enterprise networking)
    • TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, STP, NAT
    • Routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP) and VPN concepts
    • Firewall operations (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet, Check Point, Cisco ASA/Firepower)
  • Strong troubleshooting capability (packet flow, latency, MTU, asymmetric routing, etc.).
  • Experience working with ITIL-style change control and structured incident/problem management.

Desirable (Nice to Have)

  • Experience in scientific, R&D, or high-performance/technical compute environments.
  • Exposure to network segmentation / zero trust concepts in secure environments.
  • Load balancing (e.g., F5) and/or proxy solutions.
  • Network monitoring/tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, Splunk, SNMP/syslog).
  • Automation/scripting (e.g., Ansible, Python, infrastructure-as-code exposure).
  • Understanding of data centre networking and/or cloud connectivity (AWS/Azure networking).

Working Arrangement / Location

  • Location: South of England
  • On-site requirement: 3-5 days per week (candidate must be able to regularly attend site)
  • Eligibility: Must hold active SC Clearance and be eligible to work in the UK
