Principal Electrical Engineer – Water & Industrial Projects

Overview
A leading engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal Electrical Engineer to join a high-performing, multi-disciplinary design team delivering complex infrastructure programmes across the UK water sector and wider industrial, process environments. This is a key leadership hire with genuine technical influence, project ownership, and the chance to support major capital delivery frameworks. This role is a hybrid model with 3 days on-site or at either of their Bristol or Birmingham offices.

The role

You will lead the electrical/ICA design delivery on multi-disciplinary projects, coordinating engineers, managing quality, and owning key technical outputs from concept through detailed design and delivery support.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate a team of Electrical & ICA engineers to deliver design packages on complex projects.
  • Manage programme and budget for the Electrical & ICA scope to agreed milestones.
  • Produce and/or oversee technical deliverables such as single line diagrams, cable block diagrams, load schedules, MCC specifications, control philosophies, and control network architecture.
  • Provide technical governance: checking/reviewing work, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and client requirements.
  • Work closely with project management and other disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Support bids/proposals and contribute to business development where appropriate.
  • Mentor and develop more junior engineers and help grow local electrical/ICA capability.

About you

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working toward, depending on level).
  • Proven experience leading electrical design delivery within a consultancy and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design in industrial/process environments; water sector experience is beneficial but not essential.
  • Working knowledge of relevant standards and practices (e.g., WIMES), plus awareness of HAZOP, lightning risk, earthing/bonding, lighting design, and DSEAR/ATEX installation practices.
  • Competent with electrical design/analysis tools (e.g., Trimble/Amtech or similar).
  • Clear communicator who can collaborate effectively with clients and internal stakeholders.
