Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

iO Associates are currently partnered with a European space engineering company and are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of flight‑qualified hardware. The role spans design, analysis, and close involvement in manufacturing and test within a multidisciplinary delivery team.

Contract type: Permanent
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Start date: Flexible
Working model: On‑site with some flexibility depending on project phase

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical assemblies and subsystems for spaceflight applications, including load‑bearing structures, mechanisms, and passive thermal hardware
  • Support early concept studies, trade‑offs, and technical feasibility activities
  • Produce robust CAD models, drawings, and manufacturing documentation
  • Perform structural and thermal verification using numerical analysis methods, including finite‑element modelling
  • Drive iterative design improvements focused on performance, mass, robustness, and manufacturability
  • Interface with internal teams and external suppliers across the project life cycle

Your Background

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Strong experience in mechanical design within aerospace, space, defence, or other high‑reliability engineering environments
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or similar
  • Experience working with controlled design data and configuration management tools
  • Solid understanding of structural mechanics, materials, and thermal behaviour
  • Practical experience using FEA tools for static, dynamic, and thermal analysis
  • Familiarity with precision manufacturing methods such as CNC machining and additive manufacturing
  • Supporting hardware through build, test, and qualification
  • Prior exposure to space or flight hardware
  • Basic scripting or numerical analysis skills (e.g. MATLAB or Python)
