Senior Power Electronics Engineer
Role Summary
In response to strategic growth and the drive for technological excellence, our Client is seeking an experienced Senior Power Electronics Engineer. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development of critical satellite power systems, from concept to flight hardware. As a core member of the team, you will own the design of complex power conversion electronics, contributing significantly to innovative aerospace solutions that shape the future of space technology.
Responsibilities
- Conceptualise and develop high-power DC/DC converters tailored for satellite power applications, including component selection, gate drive circuits, magnetic design, and thermal management strategies.
- Design, simulate, and validate auxiliary power supplies and bias circuits, ensuring high efficiency and robustness in demanding environments.
- Engineer motor driver circuits for deploying satellite structures, ensuring reliable actuation mechanisms.
- Perform comprehensive circuit simulations, including analysing switching losses, thermal profiles, and stability of control systems.
- Build physical prototypes, execute detailed testing, and refine designs based on lab results, ensuring performance meets stringent space standards.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimise electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and minimise electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Document designs, prepare technical reports, and support the integration process within aerospace frameworks.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or power electronics, complemented by at least five years of practical experience in converter design.
- Strong theoretical background in power conversion topologies, magnetics, and control algorithms.
- Proven expertise with wide-bandgap semiconductor devices such as SiC or GaN, including drive circuitry and high dv/dt layout considerations.
- Skilled in analogue circuit design, including sensors, amplifiers, and protective circuitry.
- Proficient in PCB design tools, particularly KiCad, with emphasis on power layout and EMI mitigation techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to independently operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and electronic loads.
- Analytical mindset, proactive approach, and excellent team-working skills.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within the space, aerospace, or automotive sectors, particularly on high-reliability projects.
- Knowledge of photovoltaic power systems, including solar array behaviour and MPPT techniques.
- Familiarity with motor drive controls for stepper or BLDC motors.
- Basic embedded C programming skills for real-time control on DSPs or MCUs.
