The company specializes in cutting-edge laser systems that serve various industries. The lasers are utilized in renewable energy, microelectronics, fundamental research, life sciences, and medical applications. The primary goal of the company is to positively impact people's lives by delivering lasers with exceptional reliability and performance.

The company has experienced significant and consistent growth over the past decade, even during global economic challenges. The company develops and manufactures a wide range of lasers on-site. The purpose-built facility houses research and development, manufacturing, and marketing departments under one roof. Recently, the company expanded its factory, doubling its size to include new, state-of-the-art laboratories.

Currently experiencing rapid growth, the company is nearly doubling the size of its R&D team. The company is emerging as the hub for ultrafast laser technology within the corporation. The company has an exciting future ahead as it leads the roadmap for ultrafast industrial and scientific lasers.

The company fosters a friendly and business-focused work environment, with excellent staff facilities including an on-site cafeteria. Additionally, the company offers competitive compensation packages, including a contributory pension scheme, subsidized private health care, and free life assurance. The company also values work-life balance and operates flexible core hours, providing the opportunity to start your weekend early.

About The Role

The successful candidate, reporting to the R&D department, will join the product development team, contributing advanced mechanical and opto-mechanical design expertise for the laser systems. Leveraging the company's extensive experience in laser design, the candidate will create designs ensuring the reliable operation of the lasers across all conditions. The candidate should have a proven track record in designing systems that maintain high tolerances over a broad operating range, using calculations or FEA modelling to predict performance. Collaboration with the wider development team will be essential to measure and test the performance of the designs.

Responsibilities Will Include

Designing cutting-edge laser systems and opto-mechanical assemblies Managing mechanical models, detail drawings, and revision control from concept to final production Collaborating within a multidisciplinary project team Maintaining comprehensive documentation, including mechanical BoM and part revision control, using modern ePDM systems Cooperating with Production on tooling and fixture design Participating in formal and informal design reviews Coordinating with manufacturing and vendors throughout design, procurement, and fabrication phases Supporting marketing on product definition and customer acceptance Working with project teams to create conceptual designs for proposals Collaborating with optical and electrical engineers to solve complex design challenges Conducting tolerance analyses of assemblies and critical components Designing fixtures for production, assembly, and testing Supporting Production with ECOs and sustaining activities Assisting in the construction of prototypes for functional testing Establishing BoMs and maintaining assemblies through the ECO life cycle Generating and presenting conceptual designs and ideas to colleagues and stakeholders Conducting design reviews with colleagues

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent Demonstrable experience in designing precision mechanical components, assemblies, and machinery using various materials and manufacturing techniques.
  • Extensive experience in 3D CAD modelling and 2D drafting, preferably using SolidWorks Capability to produce accurate and appropriately dimensioned/tolerance manufacturing drawings Utilization of design and simulation tools for thermal design, mechanical design, and tolerance studies Expertise in materials, finishes, and mechanical part fabrication processes, with an understanding of associated trade-offs.
  • Experience analysing tolerances in parts and component stack-ups Attention to detail with a methodical, logical, and considered approach to design work Strong sense of task ownership and responsibility, with a hands-on approach.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team or independently without supervision Professional communication skills, both written and oral
