Learn SEO terms and understand the fundamentals of the platform.
Similar to most social media platforms, LinkedIn operates on an algorithm. To use the platform to its full potential, it’s helpful to learn terminology that can assist in attracting relevant and high-quality job interviews.
SEO – Search Engine Optimisation.
CTA – Call to Action.
SEO Keywords – Words that attract the most digital attention, leading to increased traffic. These must be specific to your target audience and as precise as possible.
Target Audience – The group of people your content is aimed at.
Conversions – The total number of times users complete a desired action after clicking on a LinkedIn post.
Click Conversions – The percentage of clicks on your post that result in a conversion.
View Conversions – The percentage of impressions of your post that lead to a conversion.
SEO Keywords
SEO keywords are a great starting point when learning to use LinkedIn more effectively. These keywords are crucial to increasing conversions and traffic, helping you stand out from the competition.
Keywords like "jobs in the UK" or "jobs in tech" are broad. While they may help you find some potential opportunities, they aren't specific enough. According to SE Ranking, the word "job" alone generated 165K searches a month (based on January 2023 data), making it difficult to view the most relevant job opportunities for you. A more effective keyword combination might be "UK job search" with 8.1K searches or even better, "jobs in Fintech UK," which has fewer searches but offers a higher chance of accessing tailored roles in the top 10 results. It's niche, specific, and targeted to your sector.
Using keyword-finding tools like Moz Keyword Explorer, Search Keyword Analytics for Chrome, and SE Ranking can help you find productive keywords with ease.
CTA (Call to Action)
CTAs are an ideal way to engage potential recruiters and tell them how to learn more about you once they find your profile. They direct people to complete actions that benefit you, resulting in more clicks and conversions. The simplest example of a CTA is "Buy Now!"
Including CTAs throughout your content, especially at the beginning and end, ensures you don’t lose potential recruiters and gives you more chances to present yourself as a quality candidate. Consider using hyperlinks alongside a CTA to direct people to your "About You" page or CV. As Billy McCaffery, author of Word Stream, notes: "The more information you provide within your CTA, the better it is for all parties involved."
Here’s an example:
“Please click here to view my CV and get in touch today if you think I could be a perfect fit for your company.”
